Odisha Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudam Marandi Department today said meritorious sportspersons would be appointed directly in group B and C category of Odisha Police, depending on their achievements in national and international games. ``The state government has decided that the sportspersons participating in such games would be appointed directly in Odisha Police,`` said Marndi.
According to the Home Department notification No 2539, dated 2nd February, 2015, Olympic participants, silver or bronze medallists in Asian and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as sub-inspectors or equivalent posts in group ‘B’. Sportspersons who participated in international games, including school and university level and medallists in Open National championships, excluding school and university games, will be appointed as constables or equivalent posts in group ‘C’ category.
According to the notification, a meritorious sportsperson shall also be considered for appointment under this rule on the basis of past achievements recorded within last five years, which covers 2010 Commonwealth and Asian Games.
As many as 26 disciplines have been earmarked for appointment. These include archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, bodybuilding, boxing, cricket, cycling, equestrian, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kabaddi, karate, kayaking-canoeing, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.
Appointment under this rule shall be beyond statutory provision of 1% of vacancies for sportspersons. Candidates must be withing 18 to 28 years of age for Group C posts and 20 to 28 years for Group B posts.
Minimum educational qualification required for Group B posts is Plus-two pass or equivalent or diploma in engineering or equivalent. For Group C posts, mumumum educational qualification required is HSC pass for constable (civil police) and class-V pass for sepoy/constable (Battalion).
If a candidate does not possess requisite minimum qualification at the time of appointment, he or she can acquire the said qualification even after appointment. However, no promotion shall be given to him or her till he or she acquires the prescribed qualification.
For appointment under this rule, a meritorious sportsperson shall have to make a written application to IG/DIG (Personnel), Odisha State Police Headquarters, Cuttack in prescribed format. There shall be a selection board consisting of three senior police officials of State Police Headquarters and two representatives of Sports and Youth Services Department.
Efforts shall be made to issue appointment order within 30 days from the date of application. A meritorious sportsperson recruited under this rule shall be exempted from undergoing induction training of police and day-to-day duties as long as he/she is active in sports.
